FASHION: 8 MATERIALS TO AVOID, THE ENEMIES OF NATURE

You will not be surprised if we say that fashion is one of the most polluting sectors in the world.

Between travel, transportation, etc. The pollution in this industry also comes from the materials used!

Here are a few things to cross off your shopping list.

Materials to avoid

01. THE BAMBOO

What's that? The bamboo ? It's a grass, so it's vegetal !

There is much to be puzzled about when starting this list, certainly.

However, bamboo can be eco-responsible only if it is FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council). Indeed, if this certification is not present, you can be sure that this bamboo comes from a deforestation!

The smile must have been lost at that last sentence.

FSC

02. THE VISCOSE

Same principle as for bamboo. If the FSC certification is indicated, everything is fine, you can go for it!

Artificial chemical material obtained from regenerated cellulose of plants such as cotton or bamboo, this material simply tries to imitate silk.

The silkworms, out with the artificial creation!

For the recipe, you will need :

  • sodium sulphate
  • citric acid
  • carbon disulfide
  • different sulfates to fix the fibers

What a good mix!

No need to specify further that all this is totally harmful for the environment and that these materials are not recyclable at all.

03. ACRYLIC

Well, acrylic with polyester and all the company must surely already speak to you.

Chemical synthetic fiber as we do not like them!

This fiber is obtained from mineral oil or other hydrocarbons.

Small subtlety of synthetic fibers, it is obviously also derived from oil. Otherwise it's no fun.

You will find this famous harmful material in fake furs for example or sweaters.

Do you see your famous down jacket or your pilou-pilou sweet that is all soft, all soft? Ahhh how nice it is with a warm drink in winter! Well, check the label first.

It is almost certain that it is polyester. It's immediately less attractive.

In addition, when it is washed this material regularly pollutes when it goes through the washing machine. This material does what it wants, and decides to detach fibrous microparticles to offer itself a journey from the treatment plants to the wastewater, and then into nature.

What a little pest!

04. SYNTHETIC RUBBER

Yes, every natural material of plant origin now has its synthetic version.

We need to go faster and consume more, so let's pollute more!

But still! Artificial rubber is much less strong and durable than vegetable rubberThe reason for this is that synthetic rubber is produced from polluting hydrocarbons.

It's obvious, anything less than quality will not toughen the garment.

However, here is some good news to warm our hearts a little during this sad list.

There are more and more projects that propose to recycle rubber to make products. If that's not good news.

05. ELASTHANNE

And it continues.

Synthetic chemical material derived from petroleum, you will find it in clothing under the terms "Spandex", "K fiber" or even "Lycra".

This fiber, very elastic, is often found in clothing intended for sportsmen.

Unfortunately, elastane is not only harmful to the environment, but also to your health.

85% segmental polyurethane (again, a petroleum derivative) makes up this material.

It acts like polyester (you surely expect it to come this one) or acrylic, elastane projects microparticles when it passes through the machine.

As soon as it is possible, brands propose to recycle this material in their products.

06. THE NYLON

Material what? Synthetic chemical of course.

And this time, long live plastic!

Like polyamide (its place is coming soon!), it is a plastic material widely used in the fashion industry.

Nylon stockings, tights, windbreaker, liners, etc. That's enough!

Always derived from petroleum, its manufacturing process is inevitably polluting and energy consuming. That's all there is to it.

Greenhouse gas, it pollutes during its passage in machine, its lifespan is very minimal, this material takes 30 to 40 years to degrade in nature. In short, the totality!

07. POLYAMIDE

Family of nylons, from the petrochemical industry.. I ask for the card of the child... The polyamide!

Like its parent, its process is extremely polluting and energy consuming.

Particles also come off when it goes through the washing machine.

08. POLYESTER

Surely the most famous of the list to close this list full of glitter.

Polyester is an artificial synthetic material derived from petroleum.

Polyester alone represents 70% of synthetic textile fibers. So much so that it is the king.

In addition to being a derivative of oil, it is also a non-renewable fossil fuel. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

This material causes a lot of damage on its way, with its very chemical and toxic manufacturing, it degrades the environment of the air, the ground, the water and also your skin.

The same principle applies when it is put in the washing machine, it deteriorates by leaving micro-particles behind.

Very deceitful, Polyester pollutes in a way that is invisible to the naked eye, yet its presence is very real.

Green earth

With this list of information, you are ready to safely avoid textiles produced from these materials.

Fortunately, many of these materials are being recycled by other textile brands to reduce their ecological impact.
